How do our native plants begin their journey?

We carefully collect local native seed and nurture it through every stage of its journey, from seed collection and preparation to propagation and growth. Guided by kaitiakitanga and a deep connection to whenua, we grow healthy, resilient plants that carry the whakapapa of the landscapes they belong to. Through patience, care, and hands-on nursery practices, we help restore biodiversity and support the long-term health of our whenua and awa

Guided by whakapapa and nurtured with care, our plant production process supports the growth of strong, healthy native plants ready to thrive in their natural environment

Eco-Sourced Seed Collecting

Honouring the whakapapa of our native plants

An eco-sourced seed is a seed that has the ability to naturally occur within the planting zones also known as Rākau whenua - able to have their whakapapa traced back to the area. We look for established ngahere and go out to collect the seeds ourselves. All of our seeds are sourced, tracked and traced so that we know where they came from and where they can be replanted.

Seed Preparation

Nurturing each seed with care

Our seeds are then carefully hand processed with many different techniques needed for the different species we collect. They are labeled and stored in a temperature controlled climate until it comes time to sow them.

Seed Sowing

Laying the foundations for healthy seedlings

Most of our seeds are broadcast sown into their soil trays and stored in our prop shed to germinate. Some species are direct sown into tray cells and put straight out on the hard stand.

Germination

Strengthening the whenua

Once sown, our trays sit in the prop shed under an irrigation system to germinate

Propagation

Giving seedlings the space they need to grow strong and thrive

As seedlings emerge, they are carefully transplanted and nurtured through the next stage of their journey. By providing the right environment for healthy root and plant development, we help each seedling build the strength and resilience needed for the seasons ahead

Plant Care & Maintenance

Plants are nurtured and monitored to ensure healthy growth and strong root systems

Following propagation, plants enter their growing-on phase, where they spend 6–12 months developing strong root systems and healthy structure. During this time, each plant is carefully monitored, watered, and maintained to ensure it continues to thrive. This stage allows young native plants to build resilience and become well established, preparing them for a successful transition back into the whenua
